breast cancer – my story part 1. rintasyöpä – minun tarinani osa 1.

On Tuesday, 12 May, 2009, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

In this blog I will be writing about what I’m feeling and what is happening over the next few months in the form of a diary.

It all started with the annual check up with my gynaecologist in Finland.

The gynaecologist was reading through my file and noticed that I had missed the last mammography appointment (the City of Helsinki offers free test every two years!) as our move to Egypt was so rushed.

She recommended I go for a check up. Immediately.

I got an appointment for mammography on Friday, 8 May.

The test images and ultrasound both showed a visible change in my left breast. The doctor then took thin-and thick-needle samples for further testing.

The collection of samples was not pleasant, but I survived. I could not look at the collection instruments at all because I have a needle phobia.

Already at the collection stage, the radiologist believed it to be cancer but we had to wait for the pathologist to examine the samples to get confirmation.

I was at that time already sure that this is not a good-quality tumour.

It was a roller coaster ride for the mind. I was constantly thinking about the uncertainty and possible certainty. I wondered how I would feel if…

In hindsight it was the waiting that was the painful part.

Minulla todettiin rintasyöpä tiistaina 12.5.2009

Kirjoitan tähän blogiin päiväkirjamaisesti tarinaa mitä kaikkea kohtaan tulevassa…

Kaikki alkoi vuosittaisella gynekologikäynnillä Suomen loman aikana.

En katsonut tehtävään tarkoitettuja työvälineitä ollenkaan koska minulla on neulakammo.

Jo tuolloin radiologi sanoi kokemuksensa perusteella epäilevänsä syöpää mutta varmistus tulisi vasta patologin tutkittua näytteet. Olin tuolloin jo ‘varma’ ettei kyse ole hyvälaatuisesta kasvaimesta.

Elin mieleltäni vuoristorataelämää. Huomasin jatkuvasti ajattelevani epätietoisuutta ja mahdollista tietoisuutta. Seilasin ees taas juu-ei maailmassa. Mietin miten suhtaudun jos…

Tuo odottaminen oli tosi piinallista jonka muistan elävästi vasta näin jälkikäteen!

The doctor put a thick gauze on the side of my breast to prevent bleeding and bruising.

Minulle laitettiin painava/kiristävä side rinnan tueksi ettei siihen tulisi verenvuotoa eikä se tulisi kokonaan mustelmille. Tässä kuva siteestä näytteenoton iltana.

In this photo you can see the ‘hole’ through which the sample was taken.Sorry the quality is not the best, but I was not really able to pay attention to that at the time.

12.5.09

I was supposed to get the results on Wednesday 13 May, but I got them already on the Tuesday. At the time I was just at the dentist. Of course I could not answer the phone, so I saw who called after the appointment.  I was told I have breast cancer at the dentist’s waiting room – what a place to find out about cancer!

I called my husband after catching my breath and shed a few tears in the crowds of central Helsinki. That’s all.

Then I began a new chapter in my life.

So, now I had the news and would start working on the logistics of it all. Oh the action!

I called the cancer nurse at the breast surgery of the Helsinki Women’s Clinic immediately. By coincidence the nurse was reading referral sent by fax when I called.

I got an appointment at the polyclinic for Thursday, 14 May.

I met the operating doctor, a nice and cheery plastic surgeon, and a woman. Just the type that can handle me and gets what I want and do not want.

The surgeon also clarified that I will not know for sure what will happen with my breast – will they remove only a small part or the whole breast – until at the surgery itself/after the surgery. What you can see in the images is a small, 1.5cm growth, but how the cancer cells have spread does not show.

Here is a photo taken on Sunday, 17 May. You can see how the bruising is still very much there!

How am I doing and what is going on in my mind now?

I am doing fine. I am not sad and crying rivers. This could have happened to anyone but it happened to me. We will try and treat the cancer and life goes on.

In Finland, almost 90% of diagnosed breast cancer cases are cured.

What I am scared of is a) all sorts of needles, and b) pain.

I have a real phobia of needles. Luckily modern needles are pretty thin, nevertheless…

Pain is unpleasant and in the long term quite tough. I become very irritable if I have to suffer from pain for a long time.

Fortunately there is now a range of pain-killers and they also prescribed quite differently to the times when you just had to suffer.

The surgery will take place on 10 June in Helsinki but I will fly there a few days before the operation. So the next entry on this topic will be after the surgery.

And really, I do not need people to feel sorry for me. I am doing just fine. I’m in the sun now for a few weeks, working out with the exercise ball and doing Pilates, swimming happily in the warm water.

So do not feel sorry for me, but go and book yourself an appointment for a mammography at least every two years and tell your friends to do the same! The sooner breast cancer is diagnosed the better chances of getting cured.

More on this topic in mid-June…

Miten voin ja mitä mietin?

Voin ihan hyvin. En surkuttele enkä sure. Tämä on minun kohdalleni, ihmisen elämään kuuluvaa draamaa. Syöpä yritetään hoitaa pois ja elämä jatkuu.

Suomessa melkein 90% todetuista rintasyövistä saadaan hoidettua.

Ainoat mitä jännitän on kaikenlaiset neulat ja pistämiset ja järjetön kipu.

Minulla on järkyttävä neulakammo.

mina EN tuntenut mitaan kipua, gyne EI tuntenut mitaan vaan lahetti tutkimuksiin kuluneen ajan takia.

  14. Hi Blogitse…
I know that this is not going to be a sorry for you comment because I know that you are strong and will get through this! I will say a prayer for you…

There is another lady going through Stage 2 breast cancer…her link is on my sidebar listed as Brenda from Paraguay. Her posts are very matter of fact of what exactly she is doing after the surgery, the chemo, etc… it is quite interesting to read, because as you say, this could be ANY of us.
I also am afraid of getting cancer in general….but we all are given what we can deal with!

    Can’t wait for more pics!

  15. It is one of those things where you have to do what you have to do! And I am sure you can get through this! I will be sending positive thoughts and energy your way. As for one comment as to not being quite the age to need these check-ups, yesterday’s news here in the states was of a 10 year old girl with breast cancer! So, by all means, if you have the means to have your body’s health monitored on a regular basis, do so! Regardless of age! Best wishes to you, BLOGitse, and thanks for sharing this experience with all.

Aika kuluu nopeasti ja pääset pian taas jatkamaan elämääsi tavalliseen tapaan. Pidän peukkuja että on mahdollisimman vähän neuloja sun muuta öklöä! Asenteet sulla on ainakin kohdallaan. Iso halaus 🙂

I also feel that it’s not a place to feel sorry (not you yourself or anyone else for you), esp you, one loses precious time of this life if you start worrying too much. Live!

This is somewhat familiar to me as my mom went through the same. I am just wondering how they will treat you after the operation, I think you have to go to hospital quite a lot and “eat” lots of medicines? Are you going back to Finland for this period of time?

I’ve thought of this – I’m not of that age that I SHOULD go but whithin few years I think I will.

BTW it’s the same with pap smear, I go get checked every ~2 years

Hi! I’m sorry for your situation, but you have just the right attitude! ” I got it and I’ve got to go thru the treatment.”
Tyttärelläni oli sama tilanne vuosi sitten. Molemmat poistettiin.
