Anti-bullfighting groups protested outside Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Spain

Greetings from Bilbao, Spain!

We had a great weekend there and loved every minute! The city is clean, people were nice, prices not as high as in Casablanca or Helsinki! Food and wine excellent! Plus the weather was perfect…

We visited Guggenheim museum and noticed a happening outside and of course I had my camera ready.

The activists from the animal welfare groups AnimaNaturalis, Equanimal and CAS International lay down in the shape of a bull, their bodies smeared with black or red paint to simulate blood.

“Catalonia has been the first Spanish region to ban bullfighting and will be an example for others,” said Aida Gascon, director of AnimaNaturalis in Spain.

The Catalan move was seen as partly driven by nationalist sentiment in a region which is keen to differentiate itself from Spain.

Bilbao is the main city in Spain’s Basque Country, which also has a fervent nationalist movement but a strong bullfighting tradition. Over the nine-day Bilbao festival, Spain’s top matadors will kill 54 bulls.

It was a really good ‘blogtrip’ 🙂
I wonder how many bloggers actually get readers just leaving their blog link…

  2. I have always hated bull fighting. It’s so unbelievably cruel. I have no problem appreciating the ways of other cultures, but when it comes to animal cruelty there’s just no excuse. I’d feel the same way if it were my people taking part in the same blood sport.
Thanks for stopping by. This was a great post!

  3. I am so impressed with activism worldwide. It is so empowering to see people standing up to violence and corporate dominace.

Your pictures are wonderful. They are so evocotive – you are a true photo journalist. I always learn so much from your blog.

The Moroccan engagement photos were especially lovely. What a lovely lady. (Wonder if that henna will wash off?!)

Hope you are gaining all your strength back!

    • Guess what – I’ve been thinking to quit blogging…but it’s you and some other bloggers who have something to say why I still hang around.
Seriously. I’m tired of empty, meaningless chit chat or posts which don’t give anything to think…OR I just happen to have some kind of ‘serious period’…

  4. I think this is one of the most amazing and creative demonstrations I have ever seen and thank goodness you happened to be there to witness it and get these amazing photos. I have always dreamed of going to Bilbao. And of course, I am in agreement with the demonstrators and yourself. I think bull fighting is mean and barbaric. I don’t like it when human beings taunt animals, let alone draw blood for sport. I am so encouraged about human behavior to see this action.

  5. Such a dramatic demonstration. If I was there, I would have wanted to be part of it. It always makes me sad when I think about bullfights.

  6. We didn’t go to the bull fights while we were there. I understand it has history but it just needs to stop. It’s cruel. I didn’t realize that they pretty much drag it out (the killing of the bull, that is) for the entertainment of the crowd. I just can’t be a part of that.

  8. Good that they are protesting against bull fighting; I got a life long trauma when I was taken to bullfight at age 8….
I visited Bilbao 3 summers ago, and I also thought it was a wonderful city, and the Guggenheim of course was great. The train station is beautiful and so is the city center as well. I did not know that Casablanca is so expensive!

    • Casablanca is totally overpriced if you compare the quality and the price.

Mutta kuvat tosiaankin näkyvät hyvin mustaa pohjaa vastaan, jos ovat vaaleita,no doubt about that!

      • ok, eikohan tuo mennyt jakeluun 🙂
Joskus joku kuva tarkoituksella sulaa taustan variin – osa leikkia josta pidan 🙂
